There once was a little girl named Rachel. When Rachel was 5 years old she found out about Locks of Love and cut off all her hair to give to other children with cancer. When she was 8 years old she had her 9th birthday celebrated by having all her gift money donated to charity:water. Rachel was only 8 days into her 9th year when her car was struck and she was critically injured. She did not recover. Because of her death and remarkable heart people donated over $850,000 to charity:water. A year after her death and her mother has visited some of the people who have benefited from the donations in Rachel’s name. video here
This is what being good is all about. People don’t notice you when you’re alive nearly as much as they notice you when you’ve been taken away too early. Usually when a young child dies in a horrific way all we can feel is horrified. There’s no justice, no greater good, just a dead kid. Because Rachel lived in a kind, compassionate way and did what little she could to make her world better we all benefit. We get that small little hint of light in the darkness. That idea that, yes, life is terrible but there’s still good in it.
Thank you Rachel.
